Volunteer Recruitment
As a mom that has been very involved in my children’s school activities, I have learned that some of the very best volunteers are parents of kindergartners. These parents are amazing…they are excited…eager and ready to help! Volunteering at the elementary school level just comes with the territory. This is such a fun and special times in our children’s lives too. Who would want to miss out on all those cuties dressed liked pilgrims, the fun class parties or helping the students pick out the perfect gift at the holiday shop?! There is no better way to get to know the teachers, principal and administration than to be involved in your children’s school! Not to mention, modeling team work and dedication for your child. Just remember to give these newbies plenty of advanced notice for the most successful year yet. Here are two fun ways to welcome these newbies and get them signed up early for all the fun.
Kindergarten Parents want to be a part of their child’s new adventure. So, together with your parent group organize a “Boo Hoo or Yahoo!” breakfast. This can be held on the first day of school after drop off or anytime during the first month of school. I suggest sending out an evite to every Kindergarten parent and making this something really special for them. Decorate boxes of tissue for the “boo hoo” parents and party hats for the “yahoo” parents! Keep it simple with coffee, juice, pastries and donuts. Create a sign-up table, by taping volunteer signup sheets to the tables with plenty of pens. The signup sheet should include a detailed description of the events, dates, times, place for the volunteers name, cell and email address. This format allows parents to volunteer for things that really appeal to them, their time and their talents. Plus, it is a great way to get everyone to mingle and learn more about each other. Plus, just remind them that they will have the best picture taking opportunities of anyone!
New parents that just moved to the school over summer are another great resource for you. This group of parents love volunteering too because it will help their child acclimate to a new school. Having their parents on campus will ease anxiety for the child and parent. These parents will so appreciate a “Meet and Greet” party sponsored by the parent board. You will have a captive audience to explain all the events that will require volunteers for the upcoming year. This should be a very relaxed event held at the school. Offer a morning and afternoon session to accommodate working parents. A VIP (Very Important Parents) party theme is perfect for this group. Set up a red carpet to the entrance of a classroom and use red, black and gold décor. Offer simply beverages and snacks while you explain all the fun things that will be going down this school year.
There are so many ways to promote both of these events. I suggest picking several different formats in order to reach the majority of parents. Sending an evite will make everyone feel special and they will love knowing that the parent board took the time to reach out to them individually. You can also make up a cute themed flyer to give to the teachers and can be send home in their Friday folders. Be sure to mention it in the school newsletter too.
